Get to Know Brett

Brett has over 16 years of experience designing, building, and successfully launching new products in both B2C and B2B environments.

Prior to joining Orbytel Group, Brett reported to the Chief Product Officer of Verizon Wireless as the Director of Product Assurance. In this role, he was responsible for end-to-end certification of all new wireless products and services (business case analysis, architecture design reviews, and product testing).

He then moved to a new role of Director of Digital Media Products. Some of his key products were NFL Mobile, Indy Car Mobile, V-Cast Video, Ring-Back-Tones, and Music. He also led a collaboration effort where he designed and launched a video search portal that included Netflix, Hulu, Apple/iTunes, Redbox, Comcast, FiOS, TWC and many others. Finally, he designed and delivered a broadcast video technology specifically for 4G LTE in partnership with Motorola, Nokia (ALU), Ericsson and Qualcomm. Brett holds a patent for the scheduling system.

Brett then became the Director of both Product and Technology for a joint venture between Verizon Wireless, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, and Brighthouse. He reported directly to the Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer in this role.

Following the JV, Brett was the Director of Portfolio and Systems Engineering for Verizon Wireless. In this dual role, he was responsible for managing a portfolio of $12B in capital projects (and related network resources). He was also responsible for early product assessment and systems design (our own internal “Shark Tank” with a systems design element to ensure product success).

In the early stages of Brett’s career, he worked for Lockheed Martin (Loral Fairchild) as a mechanical designer working on various electro-optical camera reconnaissance systems. When he started at Verizon, he was a union hourly technician working in a call center. He was quickly promoted through various Engineering, Project Management, Operational and Program Management roles (earned his first Director role in just 9 years with the company).

Brett is a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He attended the University of Maryland at College Park where he obtained his Bachelors of Science. He is a Boy Scout Troop Leader, supporting his twin sons and a cheerleader for their travel soccer team.  He is also a cheerleader for his daughter who is an accomplished ice skater and soccer player.

In his spare time, Brett has completed (4) Tough Mudders, (1) Spartan Race, (1) Century (biked 100 miles) and he has completed (2) Marathons (including the NY Marathon).

Give us one fact that most people in your current “circle” don’t know about you.

“While I was in college and post-college, I was a music studio engineer. I had the pleasure of working with many celebrities, worked with several record labels, and I contributed to some great albums (R&B, Pop, and Alternative Music). I loved 2 inch-tape, 48 track consoles, microphones, big studio monitors, tube amps, all types of musicians….. I never slept through college as I worked at the studio all night.”

What was the dirtiest job you every held?

“When I lived in Annapolis, MD,  I was a helper for a Maritime repair shop (boat repair shop).  I spent a summer carrying 100 lb bags of sand over to a sand blaster that was used to take the corrosion off of the bottom of a steel boat. When they were done blasting, I was the lucky one inside of the boat in 110-degree temperatures with 80 percent humidity shoveling out all of the sand. I was 13 or 14 years old at the time (barely 100lbs when wet).”

What was your best design project to date?

“Well, besides harmonyTM, the rebuild and re-launch of the NFL Mobile experience is a great highlight. Before I joined the Digital Media team, the good NFL RedZone content was buried, the navigation was not intuitive and we had reliability issues. I resolved the systems issues, redesigned the interface, fixed the navigation issues, and we more than doubled our subscribers that year. Our app had a 4-star rating in the app store.”

What States have you lived in?

“My father was a Commander in the Navy, so we moved every four years.  With my parents; Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut (twice) California and Washington State.  With my wife and children; Maryland, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania.”

Your favorite quotes?

“The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result” (Albert Einstein)

“I’ve had the pleasure of being the person that offers a fresh perspective to an existing organization many times (Help them find a higher gear). Change can be uncomfortable. However, we have to get out of our comfort zone if we are going to continue to grow.”

“You just can’t beat the person who never gives up” (Babe Ruth)

“Because I never give up….”
